Our last day in Pilanesberg

Monday, August 6, 2012

Today we decided to check out Sun City by Pilanesberg to see what all the hype is about. Basically it is an African Las Vegas confined to a few large structures. Casinos...check. Expensive architecture...check. Smoke coming from strange orifices...check.

I've had many people ask me just how close we are when we interact with the animals we come across. It varies depending on what the conditions are (hunting vs safari) but I took this to give an idea. Since I took this on the wide end the elie is a bit closer than it looks but this is my snapshot while hanging out the window. ( :
This group was traveling with XS to XL. It's cute to see how the babies look to mom to see how to act in situations. This is also a good reminder of why some of the parks have had problems when they've transferred young bulls with no dominant bulls to watch during their formative years. In Kruger some of the young bulls were killing rhinos for no reason. To get it under control they had to introduce older bulls to straighten them out.

Have I mentioned we've seen zebras??

This was a new sighting for us in Africa- the tsessebe.

The portrait photographer in me coming out. I had to work pretty hard to get this- his brother kept making elephant ears behind me and when zebras laugh they show a lot of teeth!
